Originally founded in Portland, Oregon in 2000, Free Geek is a non-profit who accepts e-waste donations to be recycled. They also sell refurbished computers to low-income community members. Since their launch, they have expanded to several locations across North America.
Free Geek Toronto opened in 2009 and has been working to make this a place where e-waste is disposed of responsibly, safely and ethically. They also hope to make this a place where everyone has access to computers and the Internet.
They handle e-waste recycling as well as working to get low-income communities connected with affordable computers. They even offer low cost computer and Internet training for beginners and intermediate users.
Free Geek Toronto has partnered with Shift Recycling, Furniture Bank and the Ontario Electronic Stewardship. They all are working towards the same goal of recycling e-waste responsibly in the Toronto area.
