PSA: Update your iPhone 5 right away!

If you’re using an iPhone 5, you need to update it to the latest version of iOS.

Yup, we mean right now.

If you don’t update by Saturday (November 2nd) you will lose the ability to browse the web, send emails, back up to iCloud or download apps (!?).

Why on earth would this happen? Good question.

It’s all fairly complicated and revolves around your phone’s GPS software. Basically that software is going to break, and take a bunch of seemingly unrelated services down with it (the Verge explores in some more detail here).

So if you’ve been fighting that pesky update notification on your phone, then now is the time to give in. This article has instructions for updating your iPhone. Not sure what iOS you’re running? Here’s how to figure that out.

If you miss Saturday’s deadline, then you won’t be able to update over your wireless network: you’ll have to upgrade via iTunes (instructions here, toward the bottom of the page).

Finally, maybe this is just the universe telling you that it’s time for a change. With Orchard, you can upgrade to the iPhone 6 or iPhone 6S from $155 and $175 respectively.
